Peonies on the home stretch!
This painting seems to grow daily but I can see the end and am happy with my results thus far.
Peonies
I'm on the fourth day on the new painting on the easel.
This 36x60" floral piece is a change from my woodsy subjects I'm so passionate about.
The color will be so fun especially with the weather not cooperating to make gardening season begin.
I'll post progress on this big baby!
Painting getaway.
My good friend and fellow plein air artist Mary and I took a two night getaway to this very cozy cabin south of Chillicothe. Scioto Trail (State Park) is an Indian word for Deer Trail.
We enjoyed hiking in the surrounding foothills as well as our painting because Mary and I are backpackers as well as artists.
This was a rustic retreat with no indoor facilities. Great fun!
My easel sits on the porch with the scene to its left in the photo.
"Spring Green" is in progress.
Filtering Light
The morning sun was shining so bright, catching the tops of the grasses and water. Hazy streaming sun lit the woods as I walked. This is my largest painting and it took two and a half weeks to complete the 60 inch board. I'm happy with the results.
Medium: oil on Dibond

Great Dog Adventure
My pet supply company is having a contest for which I needed a photo of myself and Izzy plus a 200 word essay telling why I wanted to win an adventure trip to anywhere in the USA with my dog. I wrote that I would take her on a painting backpacking trip to Michigan's UP.
We took a photo of the two of us critiquing my painting of she and Danny and another landscape.
Fun! You hope I win.
Blank 60"
Ok I'm all set to begin my first 60" painting. I've picked out my subject and the Dibond support is primed and ready! Am I??? Possibly in the morning when I'm energized.
Dibond.
Today I'm putting coats of gesso on Dibond which is a light weight aluminum board. My last painting was completed on the material and I like the smooth surface. Moisture can't warp paintings done on this support. There is some sanding required because I had a large sheet cut and the edges are a bit rough.
I'll be starting an ambitious 60" work soon on one of the pieces that was cut.
Grass Path
Crab Shack View
I drove to the crab shack and just as the sunset left us for this cloudy day I snapped the shot that was my reference for this 15"x24" piece.
The Edge of the World
Angry Ocean
Crashing waves and a gray sky met us this morning for our walk. What's not to love? Subtlety of the colors attracts my senses.
Two Hours before sunset
I walked from a spot where I could park and to take some reference shots on a bridge over the tidal marsh. I can picture a series of small works from these photos. I think I'll put away my large piece for the next week because I'm excited to start studies of the scenes I photographed.
Folly Lighthouse
The Morris Island lighthouse at one time was on the shore but the water rose to separate it from the land after the Army Corps decided to construct massive jetties to replace the natural channel into Charleston Harbor with a manmade one. The lighthouse was constructed between 1872 and 1876 after the Civil War.

Later.....much
With good intentions I'll continue to blog while staying in our small house in Folly. I'm making good progress on my large painting with an Ohio subject. I'm collecting a good number of reference photos for use in future works. This is my studio in the living area. Lighting has been an issue with the weather having been not so conducive to painting outdoors. (more likely my issue)
It's been a busy week with several events relating to our friends daughters wedding including parties as well and then Restaurant Week in Charleston. Am I whining. There shouldn't be any whining going on with only my studio time being shortened.
Inspired by tail color.
A cool sunshiney day on Folly Beach
I drove to the beach at the end of the town and it being cool and Monday found Izzy and I were the only walkers. A beach to ourselves to explore. I'm getting a feel for where I'd like to do a painting this week. We found a tree on the edge that had been decorated with shells hung by the natural hole each had. The sun made the shells glitter. It was a joy to see.
